How to proceed Trouble Free SQL Server 2008 Installation with Cumulative Update 1

I was reading PSS MSDN blogs and found an useful information about SQL 2008 installation and thought of sharing this with you. There is a know issue with SQL 2008 setup (refer KB article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/957453/) and they have fixed this in cumulative update 1. Lets see how to use CU1 to fix this installation issue.

  • Before Installing SQL 2008 from CD \ DVD, download cumulative update 1(http://support.microsoft.com/kb/956717) and install it in the machine, this will install the newly updated setup support files alone with the version 10.00.1763.0.
  • Once this is done, you can now proceed with SQL 2008 installation. When the installation starts it will use the newly installed setup support files bypassing the know issue with the KB article 957453.
  • After successful installation of SQL 2008 you need to re-run cumulative update 1 to update all SQL 2008 components.

That’s it you have done with the installation!!

To know more on this topic you can refer this PSS blog link “How to fix your SQL Server 2008 Setup before you run setup…“.

  1. Doesn’t work – the cumulative update cannot be installed unless it can find an instance of SQL Server 2008 or some shared feature

  2. In the article I’m pointing to install only setup support files and not the cumulative update. To do this, run the cumulative update setup and click on next and accept the license agreement, in the next page the setup will ask you to install setup support files, click on next, the wizard will install setup support files. Now if you proceed with the remaining setup it will say SQL server doesn’t exists, now quit and start installing from RTM setup.

  3. Worked like a charm. There are newer cumulative updates, of course, but the idea of running the cumulative updates first fixed the issue. Thanks MUCH!

  4. Worked like a charm. fixed my error !! Thanks so much… I was installing MSSQL 2008 DEV. Edition.

  6. Hey John.. It shouldnt ask for password? In which step you are getting password prompt?
Are you getting password prompt during extraction of CU? If yes then MS will send a mail with password to your mailbox during registration, so check it out

  7. Vidhya,
i ran the hot fix now. can you tell me what is RTM set up?

  8. RTM is release to manufacture, which you might get when you purchased or download setup kit.

  11. I tried but it’s not working . Showing me the same error. I tried installing SqlExpress 2008 after instaling HOtFix.

  12. Ajay,

That’s old post and it will resolve only that particular issue. I suggest you to slipstream the setup with sp4 and then give a try. If you face any issues send me the log files
